George Spohr, executive editor of the Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsyl­vania, has been hired as the Journal & Courier’s news director.

Spohr will begin at the Lafayette office Feb. 22.

Spohr has worked several years in different capacities as a business, police and general assignment reporter; night editor; business editor; and executive editor.

He has served in leadership roles in several newsrooms. His career has taken him across the country to cities that include Utica and Binghamton, New York; Carlisle, Pennsylvania; and Coos Bay, Oregon.

In the two-newspaper town of Wilkes-Barre, Spohr increased digital readership and audience, and he spearheaded training efforts for the newspaper’s parent company.

In his off time, Spohr enjoys hiking, cooking his grandmother’s Italian recipes and traveling to see Madonna in concert.
