Note timing of school performance reports

Indiana newspaper leadership should note that some school spring breaks could fall when their staffs are putting together Annual School Performance Reports for publication.

State law requires that the reports be published this year between April 14 and April 25.

HSPA executive director and general counsel Steve Key suggests newspaper representatives reach out to school district superintendents in advance to get their comments on the reports.

The state Department of Education should be releasing the reports to school districts now. The districts have until April 9 to suggest any changes the DOE might consider regarding their data.

DOE spokesman David Galvin said the final version of the performance reports will be available April 10 on the DOE website, www.doe.in.gov. Newspapers can download it under the Data tab to start preparing the public notice advertisement for publication.

Key said if newspapers wait until April 10 to contact school systems, they might get no response due to spring break vacations.
