With many bills still to read, HSPA already has identified three significant bills impacting public notice advertising – two bad and one good.
HSPA also has been told by two legislators that another bill will be filed to totally eliminate the publication of public notices in Indiana.
Favorable
The favorable bill was filed at HSPA’s request by State Sen. Sue Glick, R-LaGrange. S.B. 288 would preserve the publication requirement for the notice of budget hearing. Last year was the final time this notice was required, unless S.B. 288 passes.
Unfavorable
State Sen. Rick Niemeyer, R-Lowell, has filed S.B. 450. This bill would basically eliminate the publication of the tax sale list of properties, replacing the lengthy notice with a short notice telling people what website to visit to see the property description or parcel information.
State Rep. Jerry Torr, R-Carmel, has filed H.B. 1013. This bill intends to make the free publication The Current, located in Carmel, eligible to carry public notice advertising. As filed, the bill would only put The Current and the Bristol Bugle on an equal footing with paid-circulation newspapers.
As more bills are released by state House and Senate leadership, HSPA will keep newspapers informed of additional bills that impact them.
