Ferdinand News editor and co-publisher Kathy Tretter became the Rotary Club of Jasper’s third Athena Award recipient.

The award recognizes women for exhibiting eight distinct attributes – authentic self, relationships, giving back, collaboration, courageous acts, learning, fierce advocacy, and celebration and joy — in both their personal and professional lives.

Tretter became editor and co-publisher of the Ferdinand News and then-Dale News in 1992. Her work has won numerous editorial awards, and in 2013 the Ferdinand News was selected as one of three nondaily finalists for the Blue Ribbon newspaper award, the HSPA Foundation’s highest honor for newspapers.

Tretter has served on the HSPA board of directors for 12 years during her tenure in Ferdinand.

Her community advocacy work includes serving on the Dubois County Contractual Public Library Board for the past 13 years, 11 of those as president, and serving as a member of the Dubois County and Ferdinand historical societies.

She is also active with the Lincoln Boyhood Drama Association, the Ferdinand and Spencer County Regional Chambers of Commerce, and the Ferdinand and Huntingburg Merchants Associations.

She also works as a member of the board of directors for Crisis Connection, which helps women in need.
