Two longtime Home News Enterprises employees were honored during a send-off to mark their retirements at the end of 2014.
David Hill and Randall Shields retired with nearly 70 years experience between them.
Their contributions – engaging copy, sharp design and commitment to their craft – will be missed, said Jeff Brown, owner of Home News Enterprises.
Hill, a Hancock County native, had been the editor of HNE newspaper the Daily Reporter (Greenfield) since 2002. He retired after 34 years dedicated to journalism, having served as a community volunteer, a strong leader in the newsroom and a devoted mentor to his staff.
Most recently vice president of HNE Printers, Shields, also a county native, served as publisher of the Daily Reporter from 1997 to 2012, when he led the newspaper to multiple professional awards.
Becoming editor of the Daily Reporter closed the circle on Hill’s career. He got his first taste of journalism as a freelance sports writer for the Daily Reporter during his high school years before earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana State University.
Hill went on to become a reporter, copy editor and copy desk chief for publications including The Times in Brazil, The Sunday Courier and Press in Evansville and The Indianapolis Star.
Prior to coming to the Daily Reporter, Shields was a publisher and general manager for newspapers in Missouri and South Dakota, as well as a sales manager for several publications
Shields is a native of Fortville, and while he attended Indiana University and Franklin College, his goal was to return to Greenfield to run the newspaper where he grew up.
