Indiana Department of Education spokesman David Galvin has informed school districts that the annual school performance report publication window will be delayed until April.

The specific time frame will be April 14 through April 25.

Steve Key, executive director and general counsel of the Hoosier State Press Association, urges newspapers to use this extra time to plan how best to present the information for maximum impact.

Don’t underestimate the interest in this information,” Key said. “HSPA learned a few years ago that the annual school performance data was impacting property values in Hamilton County because parents were utilizing the information to hone in on particular schools while house hunting.”

In the past, some newspapers have put the information in a special tab, coupled with stories about the school system and/or the information contained in the report. Some have secured local sponsors for the tab. It’s a good venue for non-traditional advertisers who want to be seen as advocates of education in the community.

“Don’t underestimate the interest in this information,” Key said. “HSPA learned a few years ago that the annual school performance data was impacting property values in Hamilton County because parents were utilizing the information to hone in on particular schools while house hunting.”

Following is the message Galvin sent to school systems:

The Indiana Department of Education will release Annual Performance Reports (APR) to school districts on March 26, 2014. The appeals window for this year’s APR will close on April 9. Final APR data will be made available on DOE Online on April 10. The publication window for the APR will run from April 14 through April 25. Please make arrangements for the publication with the appropriate newspaper(s).”
