Legislation to tax newsprint died in committee today at the Indiana Statehouse.

H.B. 1234 sought to tax newsprint used by daily newspapers that failed to contain a certain amount of recycled fiber content.

The bill, authored by Rep. David Wolkins (R-Winona Lake), failed to emerge from the House Environmental Affairs Committee. The vote was 5-5.

HSPA thanks Bill Masterson, publisher of The Times of Northwest Indiana (Munster), who testified against the bill.
