Veteran journalist Tom French, who spoke at last year’s Newsroom Seminar to a standing-room-only crowd, will return as a speaker.

“We’re pleased to have Tom back as a presenter,” said Karen T. Braeckel, HSPA Foundation director. “He brings a wealth of information on the ideas and skills needed in today’s newsrooms.”

French, a Pulitzer prize-winning reporter, has spent the past quarter century writing and teaching. After getting a journalism education at Indiana University, French joined the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, where he spent 27 years covering cops, hurricanes, criminal trials and the secret lives of high school students, among other things.

He specialized in serial narratives, book-length stories published one chapter at a time. In 1998, he was awarded the Pulitzer prize for feature writing. Several of his serials have been published in book form.

French is a writing fellow at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. He also teaches at Goucher College in Baltimore and has led narrative workshops around the world.

He currently holds the Riley Endowed Chair in Journalism at Indiana University.

“Tom is an outstanding storyteller as evidenced by his Pulitzer prize and an excellent teacher as well,” Braeckel said. “We are lucky to have him so close at IU.”

Lunch and the Better Newspaper Contest awards gala will follow the training sessions.
