Toni Thrasher has been hired as a reporter at The Herald-Press (Huntington).

She will cover education and county government beats and write feature articles and cover community events.

Thrasher hails from Granite City, Ill., a suburb of St. Louis. She is a 2011 graduate of Webster University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and a minor in international human rights.

During her college career, she interned at the Alton (Ill.) Telegraph and continued to do freelance work for the newspaper after her internship ended.

Thrasher first knew she wanted to be a journalist when she was in middle school.

“In seventh and eighth grade I wrote for my (school) newspaper, which was called the Coolidge Scoop,” she said. “While everybody was writing about school lunches and gossip, I was writing about things like suicide bombings in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
