Q: Is video recorded from a police squad car camera considered a public record?
A: My understanding of how cruiser cams work is that the officer turns them on when there is something he or she decides to investigate as opposed to it being a running video that records all the time.
If that’s the case, I believe the video would fall under the “investigatory records” provision of the Access to Public Records Act that would allow the police to use their discretion to keep something confidential.
So you can ask, but they might use their discretion to deny you access.
