Former reporter petitions for seat on commission

Jan M. Carroll, a partner at Barnes & Thornburg law firm in Indianapolis, has submitted a nominating petition for the Second District seat on the Commission on Judicial Qualifications/Judicial Nominating Commission.

The counties in the Second District include Adams, Blackford, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Delaware, Grant, Hamilton, Howard, Huntington, Jay, Madison, Marion, Miami, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Wabash, Wells and White.

Carroll joined Barnes & Thornburg in 1986 after an 11-year career as a news reporter and editor with The Associated Press.

She has been practicing civil litigation at the trial and appellate levels in federal and state courts for more than 27 years.

Carroll was admitted as a member of the Indiana Bar in 1984 after earning her J.D. degree cum laude from the Indiana University School of Law–Indianapolis (now the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law) while working full time as the Statehouse correspondent for The AP.

Carroll has served as a member of the Indiana Supreme Court Committee on the Character and Fitness of Attorneys since 1991. She is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association, serving as association secretary from 2004-05.

The Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications investigates allegations of judicial ethical misconduct, prosecutes violations of the Code of Judicial Conduct, and advises judges and judicial candidates about their ethical obligations. The Judicial Nominating Commission recruits and interviews applicants to fill vacancies on Indiana’s appellate courts.
