Dann Denny has retired as a reporter at the Herald-Times (Bloomington).
He started his career at the Herald-Times in sports and also covered sports for the Banner-Graphic (Greencastle) prior to that.
Several years into his career he switched to what was then the lifestyle beat to have fewer weekend work obligations ahead of the birth of his first daughter.
His beat has evolved over the years to include health care, as well as nonprofit organizations and the issues they address, editor Bob Zaltsberg said.
Denny’s stories have had community impact, highlighting issues such as hunger, homelessness, disabilities, child abuse and domestic violence, Zaltsberg said.
His reporting effort titled Easing the Journey was named Story of the Year by the HSPA Foundation in 2010.
His assignments led to some unusual reporting spots, Denny said. Among the most interesting places he’s done an interview were a rowboat, a hot air balloon, and the Fern Hills nudist colony outside Bloomington.
