HSPA Foundation supplies grants to fund interns in 10 member newsrooms each summer.

Yours could be one of them.

Pulliam intern deadline
Editors must apply for an intern by Feb. 26 at www.HSPAfoundation.org/registration.

The Eugene S. Pulliam Internship Program offers work at daily and nondaily newspapers in Indiana to college students who will have at least one term of coursework remaining after completion of the internship.

Editors should apply by Feb. 26, 2016, at www.HSPAfoundation.org/registration. Click on the Editors tab in the menu bar to fill out the simple electronic form.

Newspapers agree to provide a mentor for the students.

How are interns placed?

The Foundation works to place students with newspapers close to their hometown or campus whenever possible to save them housing and commuting costs.

If a newspaper and student have an internship agreement already, the newspaper can seek funding through the Pulliam program.

The Foundation can accommodate the request if the student is chosen by the selection committee and if the agreement is noted on both applications.

What are the costs?

Each intern receives $330 per week for the 40-hour, full-time position.

The Foundation provides the stipend and asks the newspaper to kick in $33 a week to cover the nonrefundable taxes.

Credit-only internships are also sometimes awarded if students and newspapers agree to the arrangement.

Students arrange their own housing if necessary.

What training is included?

The Pulliam program offers more than most internships.

Two Foundation-provided mentors work with the students on multimedia and writing to improve their skills.

The students must create a multimedia project during the internship to prepare them for the expectations in the industry.
