As HSPA works to improve public notice advertising bills making their way through the 2016 Indiana General Assembly, newspapers can do their part to remind readers that public notices are vital to government transparency.

To help them in that effort, the HSPA Board of Directors reminds members that newspapers can access a free Public Notice Advertising Toolkit at hspa2.aimmediallcindiana.com/public-notice-promotional.

To download the public notice toolkit ad components, visit hspa2.aimmediallcindiana.com.

The display ads, best policy practices, an editorial and more are part of HSPA’s efforts to help member newspapers educate the public on the value and importance of public notice advertising in a democratic society.

Several display ad series are available, including the newest set of ads created by the staff of The Times of Northwest Indiana (Munster).

The material follows an earlier series of public notice promotional ads created by the staff of The Elkhart Truth and a sample editorial concerning the publication of notice of budget hearings.

Documents available on the site speak to the policy basis for public notice advertising and offer tips to publishers on how to best treat the notices as an integral part of their print newspaper and online content.

Future work includes an electronic guide to public notice advertising, created under the supervision of HSPA Executive Director and General Counsel Steve Key.

Pete Van Baalen, publisher of The Elkhart Truth, chairs HSPA’s Promotional Committee.

Also serving on the committee are Chris White, publisher of The Times and president of the HSPA Board of Directors; Greg Morris, publisher of the Indianapolis Business Journal; and Beverly Joyce, publisher of The Herald-Bulletin (Anderson).
