na newspapers, universities and colleges received information on Hoosier State Press Association Foundation’s Eugene S. Pulliam Internship Program for 2017.
More than 100 journalism students, over a decade, have been placed in Indiana newspapers for 10-week summer internship. The students receive a $3,300 grant for their work–either as reporters, photographers, graphic design, or digital work.
Newspapers interested in having an intern for this summer will need to apply by Feb. 24. That’s the same deadline for students to complete their application process, which is done online.
If a newspaper already has identified a student it hopes to bring into the paper this summer, it should list the student’s name in the application. If the selection committee (editors of the papers who had interns in 2016) selects that student, the Foundation will honor the request for placement unless the newspaper is ineligible for an intern due to the fact it had an intern in 2016.
The Foundation strives to make the internship program available to all interested Indiana newspapers while also taking into account geographical limitations due to student circumstances.
The Foundation keeps track of how many times a newspaper has applied and whether they were assigned an intern. A newspaper moves up the priority list the more years it applied, but did not receive an intern.
This great program gives student journalists a taste of real newspaper work,” said Steve Key, executive director and general counsel for HSPA. “It’s not unusual for these interns to get hired after their Pulliam experience by the paper where they served.”
