This being only the second year of the Legacy Scholarship program, many publishers — let alone employees and independent contractors — may not be aware that HSPA is offering scholarships for the children of Hoosier newspaper employees and independent contractors.
There are no requirements to study journalism. The scholarships are open to any children or grandchildren of HSPA-member employees or independent contractors. Please note that “grandchildren” is highlighted because the scholarships have been expanded to include them this year.
Last year, the first HSPA Foundation Legacy Scholarships were given to: Parker Marshall and Kathryn R. Gertin. Kathryn is the daughter of Christopher and Leslie Gertin. Leslie Gertin worked for The Scott County Journal in Scottsburg as the bookkeeper. Parker is the son of Kevin and Cindy Marshall. Kevin Marshall works for The Indianapolis Star as a senior accounts manager.
Each scholarship is worth $1,000, which will go to pay for costs of the students to attend college or a vocational school.
Spread the word in your buildings and throughout your organizations. Flyers and applications were sent out by HSPA and are available here.
Deadline is March 29.
