Program features sessions covering editorial, advertising, digital and management topics

A wide range of free, high-quality online training opportunities are available to HSPA member newspapers through the Online Media Campus. OMC is a partnership of America’s Newspapers, the Iowa Newspaper Foundation and press associations throughout the United States and Canada.

Programs offered by OMC cover advertising, digital, editorial and management topics. Sessions last approximately 60 minutes. Recent programs have included “Rural Journalism” and “Public Notice Best Practices.”

“The Iowa program has a full catalog of training opportunities for newspaper staffs,” said Steve Key, HSPA executive director and general counsel.

“The HSPA Foundation would be hard-pressed to duplicate this opportunity, so we’re happy to have this arrangement so that we can make these webinars available to Indiana newspapers.”

There are currently 165 webinars in the archive that can be downloaded at any time as a resource to members. In 2019 there were 21 new webinars and in 2020 there were 25.

A wide variety of industry experts present as speakers said Erica Michelsen, program & membership coordinator for the Iowa Newspaper Foundation.
Accessibility is flexible to fit with people’s schedules. “If you find something interesting, but it doesn’t fit your schedule, all webinars are quickly available as an archive,” Michelsen said.

Normally the webinars would cost $35-$45. With an HSPA membership, all webinars are free.

Michelsen said some of the most popular webinars recently have been, “Using a New Technology to Drive Advertising Sales in a Pandemic,” “The Community’s Perception(s): State of U.S. Print Weekly Newspapering,” and “Time Management Tips for Media Sales Superstars.”
