Upon obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Newberry College (S.C.), the Myrtle Beach native became the sports editor of The Newberry Observer (S.C.) for three-and-a-half years.

While at The Observer, Gable earned honors from the South Carolina Press Association in sports column writing and headline writing.

In 2007, Gable was named the sports editor of The Grant County News (K.Y.). While there, the Kentucky Press Association honored him for sports column writing.
