First Amendment Education
HSPA Executive Director and General Counsel Stephen Key creates greater awareness of open door and public access laws through his presentations to newspaper personnel and public officials. This year Key made presentations at newspapers, regional meetings, HSPA Foundation conferences and workshops for beginning reporters.
Civic Health Index
HSPA Foundation was one of several organizations who sponsored the creation of an Indiana Civic Health Index in 2011. Former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton and Indiana Chief Justice Shepard supported the effort that found the state ranks 48th in the frequency of citizens discussing politics frequently and not surprisingly 48th in voting.

Newspaper In Education Activities
NIE WEEK TABLOID: The state’s Newspaper in Education tabloid includes activities for teaching the First Amendment to help teachers present the concept in a meaningful way to students of all grade levels.
Some 7,000 teacher members of the Indiana State Reading Association receive this publication created each year with the cooperation of the Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana NIE Advisory Board and the financial support of the ISRA and the HSPA Foundation. Newspapers can obtain complimentary copies and order additional ones to enhance their NIE Week celebration.

INDIANA NIE ADVISORY BOARD AND NIE FOUNDATION: The HSPA Foundation provides administrative support and a nonvoting representative to this board comprised of seven educators and seven newspaper professionals who oversee the statewide NIE program.
NIE ROUND TABLES: These regional meetings allow Newspaper in Education professionals to discuss topics ranging from sponsorships to teacher workshops.

Print Materials Grant For School Libraries
HSPA and the HSPA Foundation support the effort to reinstate Indiana’s matching grant to provide books, newspapers and other print materials for school libraries.
The annual job fair sponsored by the Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors and the HSPA Foundation brings editors and students together to explore potential employment and internship opportunities. It usually rotates between Ball State University, Franklin College and IUPUI – all centrally located to attract students from across Indiana and neighboring states.
