As a member of the Finishing Desk, the Designer/Page Editor is responsible for designing shared content pages, slotting National Wire content, completing page budgets, proofing returned pages and placing corrections.
The Finishing Desk aims to take pressure off local newsrooms and allow local editors to focus on producing high-quality journalism without concern about production tasks. The Designer/Page Editor will both place shared content modules onto live pages and provide news budgets to Design Center page designers in a standardized format and assure quality control of publications during proofing.
Specific duties and necessary skills:
The Designer/Page Editor must be proficient in InDesign and TCMS; regularly exercise strong news judgment; work quickly and accurately to slot wire content and select and place page modules; work well under deadline pressure; have a strong command of the English language; understand the basics of copy editing; apply newspaper production standards such as headline writing, headline hierarchy and basic page design; display an aptitude for troubleshooting on the fly; and develop strong, effective communication with news editors and page designers.
Hours: Rotation of day, evening, weekend
