Trending News Reporter

IndyStar, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking a trending reporter who can identify and report on the news that people are talking about now. They love using social media, Google Trends and other digital tools to find what people are talking about and respond to it, whether that’s with a simple aggregation or SEO play or an in-depth reported story. This reporter has the urgency to get news out while people are still talking about it, but also the skill to bring strong reporting and context.

This reporter should have strong digital skills to find out what regular Hoosiers are talking about. This might mean telling the story behind a viral social media post, fact checking a rumor or helping people find information they’re Googling. In addition to digital prowess, the right candidate will be a strong reporter, willing to quickly learn and jump into areas they might not have covered before. They take pride in explaining a complex world in simple terms. He or she must be deeply curious, as they would report on topics across the newsroom, from the silly to the serious.

This reporter should excel at breaking down complex subjects into scannable stories that are easily read by busy people on the go, but also be ready to dive deep with human interest stories or other longer form content.

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent
  • At least two years of experience in journalism preferred, including strong writing and general reporting skills
  • Digital-first mindset, including familiarity with social media and digital tools
  • Comfort using digital tools to source and report stories, in addition to traditional reporting techniques
  • Willingness to tell stories in novel ways and use new techniques to get readers interested in a story they might not know they want to read
  • Ability to multi-task and work with various reporters and editors across the newsroom to get the story done
  • Drive to get stories online in a timely fashion, without sacrificing quality
  • Deep curiosity about the world and a need to always ask one more question
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation

This job may require some nights and weekends.
