An upcoming Law School for Journalists workshop in Indianapolis will educate reporters on covering the judicial system.
The Indiana Supreme Court and the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law are partnering to host the free program from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT Friday, July 20.

The program is designed to provide journalists with tips on how to cover all aspects of the Indiana judicial system.
New and experienced journalists and editors in television, print, radio and Internet are welcome to attend.
The curriculum will include:
• Mental Health in Courts – Learn about how mental health is treated in courts and the special programs designed to serve those suffering from mental health issues.
• Community Supervision – Sentencing reform at the state level has had an impact on community supervision of criminal offenders. Presenters will discuss how probation departments assist courts in identifying offenders who can benefit from supervision and services provided in the community.
• Fair Trial vs. Open Access in the Twitter Age – A round-table discussion on the sometimes competing First and Sixth Amendments. With changing technologies that allow jurors access to quick information, what is the responsibility of the courts and the media?
• Courts 101 – This session will provide useful information for anyone new to Indiana or covering the courts for the first time. Topics include jurisdiction, court proceedings, and how to interact with court personnel.
The 2012 Excellence in Public Information and Education award will be presented to a journalist who has made special contributions in responsible reporting of the Indiana courts.
