Journalists have to be comfortable with video, cell phones and social media to tell the stories in a multimedia world, said Mike Fender, The Indianapolis Star’s director of photography.

“You have to think someday they will dig up an old reporter clutching a pen and notebook and sit him in a museum right next to a T-Rex and a Beanie Baby,” Fender said.

“Smartphones – Smart Journalism” attendees who do not have their own smartphones to use during the hands-on workshop will utilize iPod Touch 4Gs loaded with apps and provided for training by The Freedom Forum.

Hoeppner oversees multimedia and mobile media instruction and a number of other academic initiatives at The Freedom Forum Diversity Institute.

The AP Photo Managers board member also previously served as The Star’s deputy director of photography and spent 10 years as photo editor and staff photographer at the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, S.D.

During the session, participants will explore some of the best multimedia apps on the market and improve their storytelling with photos, videos, audio blogs and more.

They will learn about apps and equipment to help them publish faster on both iPhone and Android platforms.

The mobile journalism workshop begins at 10 a.m. May 3 at The Indianapolis Star, 307 N. Pennsylvania St., downtown Indianapolis. The session ends at 4 p.m.
