The HSPA Foundation is sending the top journalism students in the state to member newsrooms again this summer.

The 2016 intern selection committee – editors who hosted the Foundation’s Eugene S. Pulliam interns last year – whittled down the students from 45 applicants.

To qualify, each student must either have Indiana residency or attend an Indiana college or university and have at least one semester of coursework remaining.

The selected students attend Indiana schools. One each hails from Anderson University, Indiana Wesleyan University and the University of Indianapolis; two attend Franklin College; and five go to Ball State University.

Six are from Indiana, one from Ohio and two from Illinois. All will be Hoosiers this summer as they cover Indiana communities around the state.

Kylee Crane of Elkhart works as editor in chief at The Reflector at the University of Indianapolis. She majors in communication with a double concentration in journalism and sports information, with a minor in business administration. Her internship will take her to the Reporter-Times (Martinsville).

Breanna Daugherty majors in photojournalism at Ball State. She serves as multimedia editor at the school’s Daily News and created the Dogs of Muncie website. Daugherty, from Paoli, will help out with photography duties at the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel.

Megan DeBruyn of Greenwood is working toward a double major in journalism and Spanish at Anderson University. She has served as editor in chief at her school paper and spent last semester in the Dominican Republic. DeBruyn will work at The Lebanon Reporter.

Sarah Dougan of Madison studies convergent journalism at Indiana Wesleyan, with a minor in media communication. She serves as digital editor for her school publication. Dougan will commute from home to cover the Batesville community at The Herald-Tribune this summer.

Jake Fox will continue to write for The Herald Bulletin (Anderson), where he has worked as a freelance sports stringer while studying journalism and telecommunications at Ball State. Fox, who hails from Alexandria, serves a managing editor for his school newspaper.

Robert General Jr. from Skokie, Illinois, also majors in journalism and telecommunications at Ball State, with a minor in sports studies. General serves as sports editor at the Daily News and as a sports anchor for Newslink Indiana’s student newscast. He will spend the summer at the Washington Times Herald.

Alan Hovorka will bring his skills as a journalistic data analysis and presentation major to The Herald (Jasper). The Ball State student, from Frankfort, Illinois, works as social media director at the Daily News.
