The HSPA Foundation assigned another 10 Eugene S. Pulliam interns to newspapers across Indiana for 10 weeks of work this summer.
Seven seniors, one junior and two sophomores make up the class of 2012. The Foundation pays the students for 10 weeks of work.
2012 class of Eugene S. Pulliam interns
Nana Aduba-Amoah of Chicago: The DePauw senior will intern at the Journal Review (Crawfordsville).
Kirsten Clark of Dayton, Ohio: The IU senior will work at The Republic (Columbus).
Robby Howard of Munster: The junior from IU will work in his hometown at The Times (Munster).
Victoria Ison of Bloomington: The Ball State sophomore also will work at her hometown paper, The Herald-Times (Bloomington).
Ellen Kobe of Indianapolis: The DePauw senior will intern in her hometown at the Indianapolis Business Journal.
Michael Majchrowicz of Dyer: The IU sophomore will work at The Rochester Sentinel.
Jillian McCarter of Evansville: The senior from Butler will intern at her hometown paper, the Evansville Courier & Press.
Samantha Quinn of Franklin: The senior from Franklin College will work at The Star-Press (Muncie).
Chet Strange of Jasper: The IU senior will intern at The Indianapolis Star.
Claire Wiseman of Liberty: The senior from IU will spend the summer with the Connersville News-Examiner.
Five of the students attend Indiana University, two go to Depauw, and the other three represent Ball State, Butler, Franklin College.
“We have another great class of interns,” said Karen T. Braeckel, HSPA Foundation director. “They have amazing portfolios. All have experience on their campus newspaper staffs, and eight previously interned or worked at commercial newspapers, magazines or agencies.”
Rising juniors or seniors fill most of the Pulliam internships over the years.
The selection committee, made up of editors who mentored last year’s interns, chose two sophomores this year.
Rising sophomore Victoria Ison won the Journalism Education Association’s National High School Journalist of the Year award last spring.
Fellow rising sophomore Michael Majchrowicz is campus editor of IU’s Indiana Daily Student, the only freshman among the 28 staff editors.
More than 80 students began the internship application process this year, and 37 completed it.
Students must have at least one semester of coursework remaining after their internships and hold residency in Indiana or attend a college or university in the state.
Newspapers and students apply each year before the late February deadline. Next year the application process will be online.
