The Daily Journal (Franklin) will be delivered via U.S. mail beginning June 15.

The six-day daily covers Johnson County, south of Indianapolis.

Home News Enterprises Vice President Chuck Wells, publisher of the Daily Journal, told readers postal delivery will help HNE reduce costs in a way that allows the newspaper to employ more reporters.

Wells also said the Daily Journal found it increasingly difficult to find a stable delivery force to go door-to-door in the early morning hours, resulting in service issues for readers.

Wells, a member of the HSPA board of directors, assured readers the newspaper will continue to post stories to its digital offerings throughout the day.

He noted the digital edition of the Daily Journal will continue to be available to subscribers at 4 a.m., and retail locations will have papers available by 6 a.m.

Another HNE newspaper, The Daily Reporter (Greenfield), went to mail delivery four days a week nearly six years ago.

The Daily Journal’s most recent delivery change was in 1996, when the newspaper changed to morning delivery. Prior to that, it had been an afternoon newspaper.
