Members of the Newspaper Environmental Innovation Council will present an overview of their vision for a more environmentally sustainable newspaper industry from 1-2 p.m. EDT April 14.

The group, made of U.S. and Canadian interested stakeholders from publishing, newsprint manufacturing and nonprofit groups, have forged a vision statement on sustainability and model practices. Now they are want to broaden industry support for the vision.

The statement sends clear signals to newsprint manufacturers that if they produce more a environmentally sustainable product — at comparable quality and price — publishers are ready and willing to buy it.

The voluntary standards also serve as a proactive defense against regulation, including mandates on recycled fiber content and reporting, and do-not-mail and litter laws. It also provides companies an opportunity to improve their reputation and brand with an increasingly environmentally aware public.

The council wants to serve as a useful platform for monitoring and sharing best-practices on newsprint-, production- and energy-related efficiencies and cost savings. An overview of the vision statement will be provided during the webinar, and time will be allotted for feedback and questions.
