The Indiana American Legion approved a resolution at its state convention in July encouraging posts to donate money to the Friends of Ernie Pyle.
Donations would be used to build up a fund to operate the museum dedicated to the famed World War II news correspondent from Dana.
The resolution will be forwarded for consideration at the 93rd national convention of the American Legion in Minneapolis in September.
The nonprofit Friends of Ernie Pyle group is operating the Ernie Pyle State Historic Site in Dana under an arrangement with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The site features a house in which Pyle lived and a museum dedicated to preserving his legacy.
The Friends group also is seeking support from other veterans associations.
The United States is home to 22,100 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts. If each post donated $50, the fund to support the Pyle museum would surpass $1 million.
The Hoosier correspondent for Scripps Howard won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944.
Pyle died from a wound inflicted by a Japanese machine gun on Ie Shima on April 18, 1945.
The journalist wrote of the war from the perspective of common soldiers, not generals, and his columns were often likened to a letter to home from the battlefront. They were published in 300 newspapers.
