Journalists whose publications are members of the Hoosier State Press Association can take advantage of special discounted rates to attend the upcoming Society of American Business Editors and Writers 49th annual conference in Indianapolis March 15-17.

SABEW extends to HSPA members these special offers:

• A two-for-one rate: Buy one standard conference registration and get one free. Both registrations must take place in the same transaction by registering on EventBrite at http://sabewindy2012.eventbrite.com. Look for the signup area headed “Hoosier State Press Association.”

• A discount on the two-day conference’s single-day rate: HSPA members can attend sessions on either Friday, March 16, or Saturday, March 17, meals included, for only $150 per day. The regular rate is $200 per day. Register at http://sabewindy2012.eventbrite.com. Look for the signup areas headed “Hoosier State Press Association.”

The conference, on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, will feature nuts-and-bolts workshops designed to help journalists to better do their jobs. It’s called “500 Minutes of Skills Training,” a nod to the Indianapolis 500 auto race. It will be a prime opportunity for journalists to pick up tips on covering sports, non-profits, healthcare, immigration and a new wave of American austerity measures. On hand will be writing coach Jacqui Banaszynski, formerly of the Poynter Institute.

And the conference’s keynote speakers have star power: They include Richard Cordray, the recess-appointed head of the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels; SEC Chairwoman Mary Schapiro; Jim Irsay, the owner of the NFL Indianapolis Colts; Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Jeff Belskus and Ford marketing chief James Farley Jr.

The event concludes with the presentation of awards in the 17th annual Best in Business competition in business journalism.
