Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors and HSPA Foundation sponsor the annual seminar for beginning journalists and those who want to brush up on skills.
This year’s event will take place at The Indianapolis Star’s Pulliam Production Center, 8278 N. Georgetown Road, Indianapolis. Please note: This location is not the newspaper’s downtown Indianapolis office.
The 2012 Road Show will include sessions featuring:
• A panel discussion with journalists who covered the deadly tornadoes that struck the state this year
• Covering government budgets
• Public access to information
• Tips on reporting and writing election stories
• Avoiding editing errors, especially in election coverage
• AP style and updates in the 2012 Stylebook.
The cost is $30 per person by the early-bird deadline of May 30. After that, registration is $40 per person. Breakfast, lunch and a 2012 AP Stylebook are included.

The annual workshop provides excellent training at a low cost for HSPA members. Road Show speakers have a variety of experiences to share with attendees.
The panel of journalists who covered the tornadoes in their communities includes Chuck Branham, chief photographer for the News and Tribune (Jeffersonville), where he has been on staff for 10 years; Stephanie Taylor Ferriell, who has been editor of The Salem Leader and The Salem Democrat since 2000 and has 19 years of news experience; and Braden Lammers, the Clark County reporter for the News and Tribune (Jeffersonville) since 2009.
Pam Coleman, Steuben County auditor since 2007, will discuss coverage of county tax figures, budget hearings and other financial stories.
Steve Key, HSPA’s executive director and general counsel, will present a session on the Open Door Law and Access to Public Records Act during lunch.
A panel of experts on election coverage will include Tom LoBianco, the Indiana political reporter at The Associated Press; Brian Vargus, Ph.D., a professor of political science at IUPUI; and Lesley Stedman Weidenbener, assistant bureau chief for The Statehouse File, a Franklin College news bureau, who has covered four Indiana governors and 16 sessions of the state General Assembly for two newspapers.
Tracy Warner, editorial page editor at The Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne) and a 28-year journalism veteran, will address how to avoid irksome reporting errors.
Patrick McDowell, The AP’s assistant chief of bureau for Illinois and Indiana, will cover AP style.
