A new folder at The Times’ main press has been installed.
“The new folder went on production Thursday night as scheduled and was performing excellently,” said Ben Brickman, print operations manager for The Times Media Co.
The previous folder, which folds newspaper pages as they feed through the press during the printing process, originally belonged to the Chicago Tribune and was installed at The Times in 1989.
Its age made it nearly impossible to find replacement parts, and its condition was deteriorating, so company leaders replaced it.
“There were adjustments made by all Times employees to get the paper out during the four days the main production press was down,” Brickman said. “We had several tough nights on the back-up press, which is significantly slower than the press normally used.”
Some papers were delivered late as a result.
“We thank our readers for their patience during this week’s installation,” Times Executive Editor William Nangle said. “The replacement of the folder on the press is a major investment for the company and will ensure continued quality for the newspaper.”
The Times has invested millions of dollars in maintaining its Indiana presence, Brickman said.
“It is important to us to be located in the community that we serve,” he said. “We are now positioned to providing the local content that our readership desires and deserves.
